Early Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Exposure
Passing the Scalpel holds annual events that place dental students side by side with oral surgeons providing students with early hands-on experience of simulated OMS procedures in an operating room environment on cadavers. Our annual banquet provides an opportunity to network and share intimate moments of an oral surgeon’s journey through our keynote speakers. Passing the Scalpel continues to propel the next generation of oral surgeons as its legacy of lifelong learning continues at the UCSF School of Dentistry.

An Evening For The Decision Of A Lifetime
Every winter, Passing The Scalpel hosts a two-part event where practicing oral surgeons live demonstrate surgery scenarios on cadavers.

PART 1: LIVE CADAVER DEMO
Small groups of students gather around a table and observe surgical dissections on human cadavers.
PART 2: BANQUET
A 3 course dinner with a guest speaker presentation provided to attendees as a chance to learn about the life of an oral surgery and network with OMFS attendings, residents, and fellow students.
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

Passing the Scalpel was created in 2013 by three individuals with a vision to broaden the exposure of OMFS to dental students. Dr. Brian Lee, D.D.S. and Dr. Allen Huang, D.D.S. gained insight into OMFS after their first experiences in the OR. Their selflessness inspired them to develop Passing the Scalpel with Dr. Stanley Y. Liu, D.D.S. M.D., a then chief resident of the UCSF Oral & Maxillofacial residency, so that a similar educational opportunity could be shared with their peers. These events provided dental students with a unique experience to observe OMS procedures in an OR environment first hand and share intimate moments of learning through keynote speaker events. Passing the Scalpel continues to propel the next generation of oral surgeons as its legacy of lifelong learning continues at the UCSF School of Dentistry.
